Glendale TMJD Treatment with Chiropractic Care
The temporomandibular joint, commonly known as TMJ, acts as a hinge, connecting your jawbone with your skull. It allows your jaw to move up and down and side to side, so you can chew, talk and yawn.
TMJD is dysfunction or disorder of the TMJ.
Signs and symptoms of TMJD include:
- Pain or tenderness in the jaw
- Jaw clicking or popping
- Locking of the jaw
- Ear pain or pressure
- Pain in the temples
- Neck pain
- Frequent headaches
- Difficulty opening and/or closing the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing
There are many causes of TMJD, including:
- Injury to the head, neck, jaw, or teeth
- Misalignment of the jaw or teeth
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Poor posture
- Arthritis
- Misalignment or erosion of the TMJ disk
- Excessive gum chewing
Chiropractic treatment can help alleviate the symptoms of TMJD by correcting the misalignments (subluxations) in the spine and jaw. Adjustments, soft tissue work, therapeutic exercises and postural correction can also help improve pain, tracking, and movement of the jaw.
Not all cases of TMJD are alike so each patient requires an exam and tailored treatment plan. Dr. Annie will examine your neck and jaw to determine the best course of care for your specific case.
In some cases of TMJD dental care is needed. In such cases, we will work closely with dentists to co-manage your care.
At Healthwise Chiropractic we are trained to examine the neck and jaw to determine the best course of care necessary for your condition. We work closely with dentists to co-manage your care when it is necessary to consider mouth appliances (mouth guards, night guards, etc.) or any other dental care needed.
